Four people, including three children, have died while five others remain in critical condition following the collapse of eight houses during torrential rains that hit Cape Coast on Friday, June 19, and Sunday, June 21, 2026.
The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly disclosed this in a statement on the devastating impact of the rainstorm, which caused severe flooding across several communities in the metropolis.
According to the Assembly, the heavy and continuous rainfall lasted for several hours, leading to widespread flooding in communities including Ekon, Abura, UCC and its environs, Ameen Sangari, DVLA/Nkoans, Eyifua, Mpeasem, Adisadel, Nkanfoa and Asenadze.
“Tragically, the storm led to the collapse of eight houses, mostly mud structures, causing the death of four persons – three of whom were children – and leaving five others in critical condition,” the statement said.
The Assembly indicated that survivors are currently receiving treatment at the Ewim Polyclinic and the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.
It further disclosed that about 736 residents have been displaced by the disaster, while 95 individuals have been directly affected.
Metropolitan Chief Executive, George Justice Arthur, has since visited the injured at the hospitals as well as bereaved and affected families to offer support and solidarity.
The Assembly said immediate steps have been taken to demolish collapsed structures and identify other buildings that pose a threat to lives and property as the rains continue.
According to the statement, efforts are underway to address the underlying causes of flooding in the metropolis, including plans to design and construct a comprehensive drainage system to improve stormwater management.
In the interim, all choked gutters in the metropolis will be desilted to improve the flow of water and reduce flooding.
The Assembly has also resolved to demolish all structures situated on waterways, storm drains, road reservations and buildings constructed without permits.
“This exercise will commence soon to safeguard lives and property,” the statement noted.
The Assembly further reminded residents to obtain the necessary permits before undertaking construction projects and warned that persons caught littering or dumping refuse at unauthorized locations would face the full rigours of the law.
It called on residents to support efforts to keep the city clean and prevent future flooding incidents.
