The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling the proliferation of illegal arms, saying every firearm destroyed represents a life potentially saved and a step towards building a safer Ghana.
Speaking at the National Arms Destruction Ceremony to commemorate the United Nations Small Arms Destruction Initiative, the Minister said the exercise goes beyond the destruction of weapons.
“This destruction ceremony is about more than destroying firearms—it is about saving lives. It demonstrates our clear determination to protect lives and preserve the safety and security of our nation,” he said.
Quoting Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Mr Muntaka said: “The forces that unite us are far greater than the superimposed influences that keep us apart.”
He noted that the message highlights the importance of unity, peace, and a collective commitment to building a secure and prosperous nation.
According to him, every weapon destroyed represents a threat removed from communities, a life potentially saved, and another step towards a safer Ghana.
“It sends a strong message that Ghana has no place for illegal arms, violence, or criminality,” he stressed.
The Minister said the theme of the event, “Silencing the Guns Through Destruction for a Peaceful and Gun Violence-Free Ghana,” reflects the country’s determination to promote dialogue over conflict and ensure future generations inherit a nation free from fear and insecurity.
He reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening the country’s security architecture by improving the capacity of security agencies, enhancing border operations, and intensifying measures to prevent the proliferation of illicit small arms.
Mr Muntaka also urged citizens to remain vigilant and support the efforts of security agencies in safeguarding the country.
“Every gun destroyed is a victory for peace. Together, let us continue working towards a safer, more peaceful, and more secure Ghana for all,” he said.
