Private legal practitioner Oliver Barker-Vormawor has criticised the circumstances surrounding the reported extradition of his client, Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, to the United States, questioning whether due process was followed.
The comments were made in a statement shared on X after reports emerged on Thursday that Abu Trica had been extradited to the United States aboard Delta Airlines flight DL157.
In the statement titled “Oral Address to the Wind – What the Court Refused to Hear,” Barker-Vormawor alleged that his legal team had repeatedly been denied access to their client despite requests to the Attorney-General’s Office and other state institutions.
According to him, the lawyers were initially informed that Interpol no longer had Abu Trica in custody and were subsequently directed by the court to make private efforts to secure access before returning to court.
He said those efforts were unsuccessful, adding that the legal team later received information that Abu Trica had been taken to the Police Hospital before being transferred to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
Barker-Vormawor claimed that although permission was eventually granted for the lawyers to meet their client, they were later informed it was too late and asked to return the following morning.
He alleged that when they returned, they were informed Abu Trica had already been removed from the facility.
In his statement, the lawyer questioned the timing of the reported extradition, arguing that the court had scheduled proceedings to consider issues relating to his client’s access to legal representation.
He further called on the state to clarify whether Abu Trica had been removed from Ghana before the court could hear the matter.
Reports indicate that Abu Trica departed Ghana on Thursday morning aboard a Delta Airlines flight to the United States.
He is being sought by US authorities over alleged financial crimes, including money laundering and fraud offences linked to an alleged investment scam.
The extradition follows months of legal proceedings after the United States formally requested his surrender under Ghana’s extradition laws.
