The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has expressed concern over reports that some households are immediately consuming birds distributed under the government’s Nkoko Nkitinkiti backyard poultry initiative.
According to the Minister, slaughtering and consuming the birds shortly after receiving them undermines the main objective of the programme, which is to promote sustainable poultry farming at the household level.
“The immediate consumption of birds deviates from the purpose of the programme,” he lamented.
Mr Opoku said government’s goal is to reduce Ghana’s dependence on food imports by boosting local production and encouraging changes in consumption patterns.
He made the remarks when he appeared before Parliament’s Committee on Assurances.
Meanwhile, the Minister disclosed that 1,500 bags of fertiliser have been distributed to all agricultural constituencies to support smallholder farmers across the country.
