The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has called on members of the newly reported political movement known as “The Base” to remain loyal to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and work towards strengthening the party.
His comments come amid reports of the formation of “The Base” by some members of the NPP.
Speaking on Ekosii Sen on Asempa FM, Mr Awuku, who is also a senior advisor to NPP flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia, stressed the need for party unity despite internal disagreements.
He cautioned supporters against abandoning the party simply because their preferred candidate did not emerge victorious in internal elections.
“Loyalty should be to the party first of all. You can’t say because your favourite aspirant didn’t win the election to become flagbearer you are leaving the party,” he stated.
Mr Awuku acknowledged that political parties may experience temporary challenges but insisted that the foundation of the NPP must remain strong.
“The party can have temporary shake-ups, but the foundation should always be strong. You should be in the party because you support the ideals of the party, not anyone,” he added.
He urged members of “The Base” to reconsider their position and return to their roots.
“I’m not saying The Base will hurt the NPP or not, but I am urging them to come back to their roots,” he said.
