Nana Ofori-Owusu, Director of Operations, PPP

Director of Operations of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu says both the State and the individual Ghanaian have a crucial role to play in ensuring road safety.

According to him, accidents are inevitable but if both parties play their roles well, “we can minimise the number of deaths on our roads.

“What is the State’s responsibility as regulators and the citizen’s responsibility? The lawlessness must stop, we misbehave on roads as if we are not part of civilisation,” he stated.

Speaking on Peace FM’s morning show Wednesday, Mr Owusu stated that road accident has always been a topic for discussion because the country has failed to put in measures to turn the tide.

He said the time to change attitudes is now.

“According to statistics, January and February alone recorded 411 deaths this year. I remember this was the same issue we discussed when Ebony died in a road accident. We shouldn’t wait for major disasters before we try to do something about our roads,” he stated.

He recounted: “I remember we spoke about single roads that are supposed to be double, street lights which are not on our roads, proper rest stops for long vehicles, road marking, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority about training and punitive measures for drivers when they violate road regulations…”
