Authorities have commenced the demolition of a multi-storey building at Osu in the Korle Klottey Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, as part of emergency efforts to avert a potential structural collapse.

Excavators were deployed to the site on Monday, June 8, to pull down the building, which had already been declared unsafe after suffering severe structural failure. Sections of the structure had previously collapsed, leaving what remained visibly weakened and unstable.

The building, originally designed as a seven-storey structure, reportedly lost three floors when they caved in, leaving four floors still standing but in a compromised condition.

Officials say the demolition is necessary to eliminate the risk posed to nearby residents, motorists, and adjoining properties, amid growing concerns over the safety of deteriorating buildings in the capital.

The exercise comes in the wake of renewed public concern following the collapse of a three-storey building at Avenor in North Kaneshie on Sunday, June 7, which left two people dead and several others injured.

During a visit to the Avenor disaster site, Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak disclosed that 16 buildings across the Greater Accra Region have been identified as structurally unsafe and are scheduled for demolition in the coming days.

He noted that government, working through the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), is actively assessing buildings considered unsafe for habitation and taking steps to evacuate occupants where necessary.

According to him, the aim is to act swiftly to remove dangerous structures before they pose further threats to lives and property.

The Osu demolition is part of broader preventive measures aimed at strengthening building safety enforcement and reducing the risk of future collapses in the capital.
