A Resident Engineer at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Interchange, Kwaben Diafo has refuted claims that the overpass is the cause of the perennial flooding in the area.

“The Nkrumah overpass is not the cause of the perennial flooding but we need to dredge and restore both the Odaw channel and the Korle Lagoon to avert the perennial flooding in Accra,” he suggested.

According to Mr Diafo, the overpass at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle has nothing to do with flooding.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem show, Mr Diafo explained that it would take a good desilting work in the Korle Lagoon to resolve the perennial flooding at the Nkrumah Circle.

“The Odaw River is a main outfall for a lot of drainage systems within that part of Accra. Once the Odaw River is full, all the other side drains that connect into it will not go and obviously that creates a problem.

“As at now, the Korle Lagoon is choked due to the sediment carried from the Alajo, Kokomlemle and Nima gutters causing the water to remain stagnant in the Odaw River leaving all the fish in the Korle Lagoon dead.” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Registrar of the Engineering Council, Mr Wise Ametefe in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen Show in April 2019, stated that until the Nima component of the drainage is fixed everything done at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, apart from the flyover, will come to nought.

Mr Ametefe disclosed that some $10 million will be needed to solve the Nima component of the drainage which stretches from Paloma, through Circle to the Odaw River areas.
