Former Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Sylvester Mensah, says there are more challenging times ahead for the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Mr Mensah is surprised despite all the strides his administration made, the NHIA is still bedeviled with a myriad of problems including struggles to pay claims of service providers.

He told Adom FM’s “Dwaso Nsem” Monday, that the NHIA achieved a lot during his tenure as CEO.

“Though those who took over are trying their best, I think we are seeing the worst situation in NHIS today. We have achieved so much during my tenure. For example, we received so many awards and other good things,” he noted.

According to Mr Mensah, some challenges his administration fixed have resurfaced and situations have worsened.

“The only challenge, at that time, was claims owed to service providers”, he asserted.

But in the advent of these challenges, he managed to put the scheme on its toes.

“Yes! There were challenges and I can tell you that the only challenge has to do with funds and arrears. Government had to clear it but sometimes government doesn’t have money and therefore as CEO you have to know how to communicate that with your management,” he said.

He continued, “As a CEO, you don’t have to always make comments on challenges at the NHIS. We don’t pray for any government to fail, we should pray to make it succeed and that is why I urge the current CEO not to defend government in such situations else you could be sacrificed.”
