A relative of one of the seven youth, who were wrongfully shot and killed by Kumasi Police in 2018, has said the family needs more than government’s compensation package to the affected families.

Ahmed Salim was commenting on the government’s announcement to pay compensation packages to the families of the deceased.

Ahmed who was commenting on Accra-based radio station, Citi FM, the decision to compensate the families is laudable but a bigger compensation lies in the prosecution of the suspected killers.

On Tuesday, January 8, 2018, the government announced a GHS 1.75 million compensation will be given to the affected families.

The announcement follows the findings of a seven-member government committee which established that the deceased who were shot by police at Manso Nkwanta in the Ashanti Region were not armed robbers as was originally claimed by the police.

Indeed, we have welcomed the decision of the President on the package given but we have certain reservations. “We were thinking that the IGP should have interdicted the Police Commander and those men who acted in this serious matter before anything serious will go on,” he said.

The killing of seven on July 7, 2018, triggered outrage and anger in Zongo communities in Kumasi with residents insisting on the innocence of the seven.
