Countries hit hard by the coronavirus crisis are offering to pay travellers to visit them once the pandemic is over in order to boost their economy.
Many popular hotspots have seen the number of visitors each month decline to zero as flights have been grounded and borders closed globally.
Since 17 March, Brits have been advised against all non-essential travel and from June 8, there will be a mandatory 14-day quarantine for any travellers returning home.
Currently the FCO has extended the advice for an “indefinite” period, so no one knows yet when normal travel will resume.
But after the coronavirus crisis subsides, there will be a time when foreign travel will resume.
And some countries are desperate for travellers to visit in order to boost the ailing tourism sector.
We’ve taken a look at what could be on offer once lockdown restrictions are lifted.
1. Sicily
The Italian island could pay for up to half of the cost of flights, and offer one free night of accommodation in three for tourists wanting to visit.
The pandemic hit Italy fast and hard, and the tourism industry taking a major hit as visitors have had to stay away this year.
But whilst it seemed like enjoying limoncello and pasta at a plaza would be off-limits all year, the country is planning a comeback.
Holidaymakers will also enjoy free entry to some of the regions world-class museums and archeological sights.
Vouchers will be made available via the Mediterranean island’s official website, Visit Sicily.
2. Mexico
When Brits return to Mexico in the hunt for tacos, sandy beaches and an incredible culture, they may also bag a free hotel stay.
According to the Association of Hotels in Cancun, one new measure could be ‘Come to Cancun 2×1’ offer, which offers a free night in the hotel if you pay for two.
Other offers could include your plane ticket being covered if you travel with a specific company.
3. Bulgaria
Like many countries, the government is raring for Brits to return to its country as soon as possible.
And to sweeten the deal, at Bulgaria’s Sunny Beach and other tourist hotspots, visitors will be offered free sun loungers, sun beds and tables when they reopen for business.
4. UK staycations
If a summer holiday abroad this year fails, there will hopefully be plenty of opportunities to stay at home and enjoy this far flung corners of the UK.
Patricia Yates, VisitBritain’s acting CEO told The Sun that financial incentives are being considered in order to persuade Brits to enjoy the tourism opportunities at home.
She told Sun Online : “For every country, kickstarting the domestic market is really important and Italy has gone with that idea.
“It is an interesting suggestion for us if we look at what others are doing.
“So we could be looking at marketing campaigns or yes, you could give money straight to people and incentivise them to holiday at home.”
5. Cyprus
Unlike other offers, this one is something visitors will not hope to access.
But if it happens, you’ll be grateful to the Cypriot government for looking after you and your family or friends so well.138208672551
At the airport in Cyprus, a random number of visitors will be tested every day.
If a traveller tests positive, the person will receive free care and their families or friends will have their costs of lodging, food and drink covered by the government.
Sounds like a good deal if you end up in those unfortunate circumstances.
