Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, former Minister of Sports

Former Sports Minister, Nii Lante Vanderpuye says on a scale of 100, he will give the Black Stars 35 per their performance so far in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ghana began their campaign on a back-to-back draw with Benin and Cameroon in their opening two games before defeating Guinea-Bissau 2-0 which secured them a place in the knockout stage of the competition.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Morning Show, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodoo Constituency said though Ghana managed a top position in Group F ahead of Cameroon, their performance was nothing to write home about.

“Though we topped our group, our performance was below standard; the Black Stars we know is not the same Black Stars we are witnessing. We are where we are [knockout stage] just because of God’s grace,” he said.

“In our match against Benin, we were lucky; against Cameroon too we were lucky. Even against Guinea-Bissau, look at the number of times they came at us hitting the bar and the penalty we committed which the referee ignored. So I am glad Kwesi Appiah himself has admitted he wasn’t happy about our first half performance,” he noted.

It has been speculated that each player of the Black Stars will be paid $80,000 for making the final 23-man squad for the tournament.

But, the MP says there is no economic sense in that.

”You don’t pay appearance fees at the Cup of Nations. We are nurturing monsters and they will devour us one day,” he added.
