The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has rejected the appointment of Emelia Agbenyo as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), describing her alleged affiliation with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as a threat to public confidence in the electoral process.

In a statement dated Tuesday, October 13, 2026, and signed by its National Communications Director, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the party called on President John Dramani Mahama to withdraw the appointment.

The NPP argued that Madam Agbenyo’s previous role as the NDC’s governance sector spokesperson during the preparation of the party’s 2024 manifesto, as well as her alleged participation in NDC campaign rallies, raised concerns about her ability to perform her duties impartially.

According to the party, videos showing her campaigning for the NDC and wearing the party’s campaign T-shirts were evidence of her political affiliation.

The NPP said her appointment to the leadership of an institution responsible for overseeing elections, less than two years after the 2024 campaign, was unacceptable.

It also accused President Mahama of contradicting his earlier position on appointments to the Electoral Commission.

The party cited comments made by the President in March 2023, when he reportedly criticised the appointment of persons he described as party activists to the Commission and called for an amendment to Article 43(2) of the 1992 Constitution to require parliamentary approval for such appointments.

The NPP said the President’s decision to appoint Madam Agbenyo was inconsistent with that position.

It warned that perceived partisanship within the Electoral Commission could undermine public confidence in voter registration, electoral boundary decisions and the declaration of election results.

The party maintained that confidence in the Commission was essential to safeguarding electoral credibility and the country’s peace and stability.

The NPP also called on the Council of State to explain the advice it provided on the appointment.

It further urged the government to use the ongoing constitutional review process to reform the appointment of Electoral Commission members, in line with the proposal it attributed to President Mahama in 2023.

The party said it would use all lawful means available to protect the integrity of Ghana’s electoral system and called on civil society organisations, religious bodies, the media and other stakeholders to support its position.

The statement also expressed concern about remarks made in an acceptance speech delivered by a person identified as Mr Asamoah, which the party described as troubling and potentially damaging to national stability.
