The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Director of Elections, Mahdi Jibril, has challenged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to explain why it has not raised similar concerns about Dr. Joseph Asamoah’s appointment as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), while criticising the appointment of Emelia Afi Agbenyo.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, Mr Jibril questioned the party’s apparent focus on Agbenyo, urging its members to disclose any concerns they may have about Dr. Asamoah.

“I challenge anyone in the NPP to tell me why they are not talking about Dr. Asamoah. Why are they not mentioning him? What do they know about him that they are not telling Ghanaians?” he asked.

His comments come amid controversy over Agbenyo’s appointment, with the NPP raising concerns about her previous involvement in NDC political campaigning and its implications for the Electoral Commission’s perceived neutrality.

Mr Jibril, however, questioned what he described as the party’s selective criticism, arguing that it should explain why its concerns appear to be directed at Agbenyo rather than both deputy chairpersons.

He also recalled the NPP’s position that the Electoral Commissioner does not determine electoral outcomes, urging the party to focus instead on its preparations for elections.

“The NPP told us that the Electoral Commissioner does not influence electoral outcomes. Just do your work well and train your agents,” he said.

Mr Jibril’s remarks add to the ongoing political debate over the appointments and the need to maintain public confidence in the Electoral Commission’s independence and impartiality.
