Ghanaian highlife fraternity has been hit by the death of veteran musician Nana Safohene Gyeni, affectionately known as the “Nzema Bob Marley”.
News of his passing was announced on Thursday, September 3, 2026, sparking an outpouring of tributes from music lovers who celebrated his contribution to highlife, particularly in the Nzema and Western regions.
Nana Safohene Gyeni enjoyed a long and productive career, recording more than 100 songs across multiple albums.
His music also reflected his versatility, with songs performed in Nzema, Fante and Twi, allowing him to connect with audiences beyond his immediate community.
One of his celebrated compositions, “Nea Ye Boe”, is regarded as one of the works through which he influenced a younger generation of musicians.
His contribution to music in the Western Region was also formally recognised when the organisers of the 610Music Western Music Awards honoured him with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Beyond his recorded works, Nana Safohene Gyeni’s enduring influence was rooted in his career as a broadcaster.
He served West End Radio for a decade, from 2016 To 2026 until his passing after a short illness.
