Former Ghanaian boxer Ayitey Powers has described his recent arrest and legal troubles as a spiritual attack, saying he believes the ordeal was the work of the devil.
Speaking after he was discharged by the Dansoman Circuit Court, Powers said he was grateful to God for helping him through the difficult period and insisted that the circumstances surrounding his arrest did not reflect his character.
Powers was arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command on August 24, 2026, after reporting himself to the police following an invitation over a viral social media video.
He was subsequently arraigned before the Dansoman Circuit Court and charged with threat of death. The court remanded him for one week and scheduled him to reappear on September 2 as investigations continued.
He was, however, discharged by the court when he appeared on the scheduled date.
Reflecting on the case, Ayitey Powers maintained that he does not insult or physically attack people and questioned how he found himself at the centre of the controversy.
He attributed the situation to spiritual forces, saying, “I have never threatened to assault someone or even insult someone online before so I don’t know how this happened. Later I can say that, it’s the work of the devil. Satan has planned it, yet it should not be.”
Ayitey Powers also spoke about the financial dispute surrounding the matter as he revealed that he is willing to let it go
“The money is almost one year. And this same money send me to custody, one week,” he said.
The controversy followed an ongoing disagreement between Powers and authorities over the cancellation of a boxing event he was promoting and financial losses he claimed to have suffered.
The Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) had called on the police to investigate and prosecute him over comments in a viral social media video and also initiated disciplinary proceedings against the former boxer.
Ayitey Powers, however, says the ordeal has strengthened his reliance on his faith. He expressed gratitude to God for seeing him through the case and said he hopes to return to his worship activities.
