Gospel musician Ohemaa Mercy was overwhelmed with emotions while recounting the painful personal experience that inspired one of her most famous songs, Si Abotare.
Sharing her humble beginnings in an interview on Joy Prime, the gospel star revealed that the song was a message she received directly from God during a season of disgrace and disappointment.
The incident happened in her early days as a pupil teacher, when she was publicly disgraced by a loan shark in her classroom.
“I remember when I was in a classroom, I was owing someone, and a person came around to collect the money. I didn’t have so I decided to flee. While I was leaving the classroom, one of my shoes got torn, and I have to carry it in my hand in my presence of my students. I was so embarrassed by it that I forget I was being humiliated for owing,” she recounted amid tears.
Ohemaa Mercy said it took the intervention of a passerby to plead on her behalf and settle her debt before she was freed from the drama.
She added that the experience deeply affected her, and after eventually returning to her office, she broke down in tears.
It was during that emotional moment, she recalled, that she heard a voice telling her, “Si abotre twen me,” which she explained as a message to be patient and wait for God’s redemption.
She said the experience has remained with her throughout her life because of how difficult that period was.
For Ohemaa Mercy, however, the painful experience eventually became the inspiration for a message that would go on to touch the lives of many people through her music.
With the help of producer Nacee, she was able to put her thoughts together and craft an inspiring song that has since resonated with listeners.
