The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has condemned the alleged assault of Adom Brands’ Oti Regional Correspondent, Obrempongba Kwame Owusu, by suspected military personnel enforcing the curfew in Nkwanta South.
The Association is calling on the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) to ensure a thorough and expeditious investigation into the incident and sanction anyone found culpable.
GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwomfour made the call at a press conference, where he stressed the need to protect journalists in the line of duty.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday, July 11, when the journalist was covering developments following the New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency executive elections in the area.
According to Mr Dwomfour, the GJA has photographic evidence that could help identify the individuals allegedly involved in the attack.
He said the Association is ready to make the images available to the appropriate authorities and the media to assist investigations.
However, the GJA has decided not to release the evidence immediately, allowing the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to complete their respective investigations.
Mr Dwomfour emphasised that journalists must be able to perform their duties without fear, intimidation or physical assault, particularly when reporting matters of public interest.
He therefore urged security agencies to ensure that the rights and safety of journalists are respected while carrying out their professional responsibilities.
