The Christian Council of Ghana has expressed its readiness to support efforts to complete the construction of the National Cathedral.
The Council made its position known during a meeting with the newly appointed Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga.
General Secretary of the Christian Council, Cyril Fayose, urged the Minister to remain committed to the position he expressed during his vetting that there is nothing inherently wrong with the construction of the National Cathedral.
According to him, the Christian community is prepared to mobilise resources and collaborate with government to ensure the project is completed.
Mr Fayose said the Council is willing to engage stakeholders and contribute to efforts aimed at finding a sustainable way of completing the project.
The Minister, Mahama Ayariga, for his part, maintained that there is nothing wrong with constructing a cathedral or mosque with state funds, provided the necessary approvals are obtained from Parliament.
He explained that after settling into office, he would engage Christian and other religious leaders to discuss how the National Cathedral could be constructed in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s direction.
The engagement is expected to provide an opportunity for government and religious leaders to explore possible funding arrangements and other mechanisms for the completion of the controversial project.
