The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has called on every household in Ghana to have at least three dustbins to help address the country’s growing sanitation challenges.
Speaking during a meeting with the Christian Council of Ghana, the Minister described poor sanitation as a major national concern that requires collective action from government and citizens.
He said the improper disposal and mixing of different types of waste at the household level contribute significantly to Ghana’s sanitation problems.
According to Mr Ayariga, households must begin separating waste at source by providing at least three dustbins for different categories of waste.
“At least every household should have three dustbins.”
He stressed that Ghanaians must take sanitation seriously and adopt responsible waste management practices if the country is to achieve a cleaner and healthier environment.
The Minister also urged citizens to draw lessons from countries such as Rwanda, which he said had made significant progress in maintaining clean and well-managed communities.
He questioned why Ghana could not adopt similar measures and achieve comparable results in sanitation.
Mr Ayariga said tackling the sanitation challenge would require a change in attitudes and greater responsibility from individuals, households and communities.
