An old student of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Kwabena Egyiri, says he was deeply disturbed and almost broke down after hearing allegations from some students about the conduct of the school’s headteacher, Abdulai Zakaria.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Egyiri said the concerns first came to his attention about five months ago after receiving a call from someone abroad, who questioned why he had remained silent despite his reputation for speaking out on issues affecting the school.
“The issue came to my attention about five months ago. I had a call from someone abroad who told me about what was happening in the school and questioned why I had been silent as someone who is known to be fearless and courageous,” he said.
He explained that although he was initially unable to follow up due to his schedule, he later visited the school to gather firsthand information.
According to him, he discreetly went to the school premises and engaged some students, many of whom he claimed confirmed the allegations.
“When I had time, I drove to the school and parked at a place nobody would even notice my car. Randomly, I called about 20 students, and about 18 of them confirmed the situation,” he alleged.
Mr Egyiri said the accounts shared by the students left him emotionally overwhelmed.
“I nearly cried at a point, but I had to pull myself together,” he said.
He added that even some male students appeared affected by the situation but were reluctant to speak openly.
“Even the male students, you could see pain in them, but they can’t even talk,” he said.
Mr Egyiri said he later spoke with two students who were identified to him as alleged victims, describing the accounts they shared as disturbing.
“They called about two victims for me and I spoke with them. I was so angry hearing those things and I tried to calm down,” he stated.
He further alleged that his findings raised concerns about the school’s support systems for students, claiming that a teacher assigned to receive students’ complaints was denied access to the role.
“My findings revealed that he was allocated an office so that the students could come to them with their problems and confide in them. But the headmaster resisted and took the office from them because he wasn’t in support of their role,” he alleged.
Mr Egyiri also recounted allegations made by two students, claiming they described incidents involving the headteacher.
He alleged that one student told him the headteacher invited her to his residence, where she was asked to enter a bedroom and perform an act she was uncomfortable with.
He further alleged that another student claimed she was invited to the headteacher’s room, where she was subjected to inappropriate behaviour before being given GH¢100.
The allegations made by Mr Egyiri have not been independently verified. Authorities are expected to investigate the claims and establish the facts surrounding the matter.
