The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has announced that the government will begin demolishing illegal structures encroaching on the Kpeshie Lagoon within the next 21 days as part of efforts to reduce flooding in the capital.
Speaking in an interview with Adom News, the Minister said inspections conducted by the authorities revealed that owners of the affected structures did not have valid permits to build on the waterway.
According to her, the demolition exercise forms part of a broader strategy to reclaim waterways, improve drainage systems and minimise the recurring flooding that affects several parts of Accra during the rainy season.
Meanwhile, the Political Coordinator at the Office of the President, Anthony Nukpenu, said preparatory works would be carried out before the demolition exercise begins.
He explained that the Kpeshie Lagoon would first be dredged and widened to improve water flow and restore its capacity before the illegal structures are removed.
Mr Nukpenu said the exercise forms part of the government’s broader flood mitigation strategy, which includes desilting drains, reclaiming waterways and enforcing planning regulations to prevent further encroachment on water bodies.
