Desilting works have begun on the Korle drains at Agbogbloshie as the government steps up efforts to address flooding in Accra ahead of the rainy season.

The Deputy Waste Manager of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Victor Kotey, said Dredge Masters has commenced the exercise following concerns raised in an Adom News report about the condition of the drains.

According to Mr Kotey, the project is being executed under a contract awarded by the World Bank through the Government of Ghana as part of measures to improve drainage infrastructure and reduce flooding in the capital.

He disclosed that the AMA is currently awaiting compensation funds from the World Bank to pay residents whose structures are expected to be affected by the demolition exercise.

The compensation, he explained, will pave the way for the full implementation of the desilting project along the Korle drains.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has appealed to residents living along the Galaway stretch of Agbogbloshie to voluntarily vacate their buildings ahead of the planned demolition.

He said the exercise is necessary to restore the drainage system and protect lives and property, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, also said the inspection of flood-prone areas, including Agbogbloshie, Ayawaso Central and La Dade-Kotopon, was carried out on the directive of President John Dramani Mahama.

She explained that the government’s objective is to ensure that major drainage channels are cleared to minimise the risk of flooding whenever it rains.

The desilting exercise forms part of broader government efforts to strengthen flood prevention measures and improve sanitation across the Greater Accra Region.
