The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) will next week begin another round of demolitions at Laboma and Agbogbloshie, targeting structures constructed on waterways as part of measures to address flooding in the capital.
The exercise follows recent clean-up campaigns, desilting of drainage systems and earlier demolitions carried out after the June 29 floods that affected several parts of Accra.
Speaking after a monitoring tour of selected Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo said the government remains committed to reclaiming encroached waterways and implementing measures to reduce flooding.
She explained that the planned demolitions form part of broader efforts to restore buffer zones, improve drainage infrastructure and prevent a repeat of the devastation caused by the June floods.
“We have noticed that a lot of the buildings must come down and so we will do a major demolition over there, hopefully next week. We want to create the buffer like we said. We can see that the refuse was caused by the squatters over there. Once we clear the place, we wouldn’t have issues there,” she said.
The Minister stressed that the government will continue to enforce planning regulations and remove structures obstructing waterways as part of efforts to make Accra more resilient to flooding.
