The Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA), in collaboration with the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has begun a major demolition exercise at the Tema New Town beach following concerns over unhygienic fish processing practices.

The exercise targeted makeshift structures along the shoreline where some women were reportedly drying fish under unsanitary conditions, raising fears about food safety and public health.

Speaking during the operation, the Public Relations Officer of the Tema Municipal Assembly, Frank Asante, said the demolition exercise would continue until the area is fully redeveloped.

He stressed that allowing fish processed under such conditions to enter the market poses a serious health risk, making strict enforcement necessary.

He also stated that the affected occupants were served with prior notice before the demolition commenced.

The action follows a recent report by Buss Stop Boys during one of its community clean-up exercises, which highlighted the poor sanitary conditions under which fish was being dried along the beach.

One of the affected fish processors appealed to the authorities to provide waste bins and improve sanitation facilities instead of demolishing their structures, arguing that better support would help them maintain a cleaner working environment.

The Tema East Sub-Metro Chairman assured the affected women that the area would be redeveloped, adding that they would only be allowed to resume their activities after the redevelopment is completed and the site meets the required health and environmental standards.
