The Medical Superintendent of the Kyebi Government Hospital in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region, Dr Isaac Antwi, has revealed that the hospital’s oxygen plant has been out of service for more than three years.
He said the situation has forced management to travel to Koforidua to purchase oxygen cylinders to support the treatment of patients who require oxygen.
Dr Antwi made the disclosure when the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr Kingsley Agyemang, presented medical equipment to the hospital to help improve healthcare delivery at the facility.
The Kyebi Government Hospital, also known as the Abuakwa South Municipal Hospital, serves as a major referral facility for neighbouring municipalities and districts in the Eastern Region, attending to hundreds of patients daily.
According to Dr Antwi, the non-functional oxygen plant has become a major challenge for medical personnel, particularly when treating patients who require oxygen support.
He estimated the cost of repairing the plant at GH¢500,000 and appealed to philanthropists, corporate organisations, individuals and other well-meaning members of the public to support the hospital in restoring the facility.
Meanwhile, Dr Kingsley Agyemang disclosed that his office is working to secure a dialysis centre for the hospital.
He also announced that construction of accommodation for health workers is ongoing at Asiakwa, as part of efforts to address the acute accommodation challenges facing health personnel in the constituency.
The medical equipment donated to the hospital included three suction machines, three electronic weighing scales with height measurement, two pulse oximeters, ten blood pressure machines, 10 thermometers, three electronic patient monitors, 20 wheelchairs, several boxes of examination gloves and one Cardiotocography (CTG) machine.
