An old student of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Kwabena Egyiri, has called for the removal of all housemistresses at the school, accusing them of failing to adequately support female students amid sexual allegations involving the headteacher, Abduali Zakaria.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Egyiri alleged that some housemistresses failed to act after female students reported concerns about alleged inappropriate conduct.
According to him, one of the affected students informed female teachers about the alleged incident but was initially discouraged from making the matter public.
“I spoke to one of the students, and she confirmed she told some female teachers, and they warned her not to tell anybody. But because she was not at ease, she confided in two other teachers,” he alleged.
Mr Egyiri claimed that one of the teachers, identified as Teacher Amankwa, later confronted the headteacher, who he said acknowledged the issue.
He alleged that the headteacher subsequently asked to meet the student to find out what she wanted.
“According to her, she said she wants the headteacher out of the school because she might not be the only victim,” he said.
The former student described the affected student as emotionally and physically traumatised, adding that several other female students may also have concerns they want to share.
“Most of the female students wish people would ask them questions, and from their demeanour, there are a lot on their minds,” he said.
Mr Egyiri also raised concerns about supervision at the school, questioning how students could visit male teachers’ residences without proper monitoring.
“I even asked some of the students if they knew by law they shouldn’t go to their male teacher’s house without permission or supervision from their housemistress, and they said no,” he alleged.
He further claimed that female teachers who were expected to provide support failed to intervene.
“When the incident happened, none of the female teachers was willing to help,” he said.
Mr Egyiri insisted that all housemistresses should be removed from the school and investigated over their handling of the matter.
“All the housemistresses need to go, and none of them should be spared. They have to leave the school and have questions to answer,” he stated.
He also questioned the headteacher’s conduct, arguing that his age and living arrangements should have prompted closer supervision of his interactions with female students.
“He is in his 50s, and he stays alone,” Mr Egyiri said.
His comments follow unrest at Obuasi SHTS after some students alleged that the headteacher was involved in an incident involving the burial of a foetus in a nearby bush.
Some students have also accused the headteacher of having inappropriate relationships with female students, with claims that the foetus was linked to an alleged abortion involving a student.
The allegations have not been independently verified, and the headteacher has not publicly responded to the claims.
Authorities are currently investigating the matter.
