Ketu North Member of Parliament and President of Nukunu Sports Academy, Edem Agbana, has raised concerns over the low wages earned by some Ghana Premier League players, revealing that he recently met a player who had been paid just GH¢300.
Speaking to Sporty FM ahead of the start of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season, Mr Agbana said the financial difficulties facing many players reflect broader challenges confronting clubs, rather than simply the decisions of team owners.
“I met a Ghana Premier League player who told me he’s been paid GH¢300,” Agbana said.
He claimed that some players in Ghana’s top flight earn less than GH¢1,000, highlighting the economic pressures affecting domestic football.
However, Agbana argued that club owners should not shoulder all the blame, pointing to declining attendance and inadequate infrastructure as major obstacles to improving players’ earnings.
“There are players who earn less than GH¢1,000. But who do you blame? You can’t blame the team owners.”
Drawing on his experience as the head of Nukunu Sports Academy, Agbana said running a football club requires significant financial investment despite limited returns.
“As a team owner, I look at the investment going in, but there is low patronage, and the facilities are not there,” he added.
His remarks come as Ghanaian football prepares for the launch of a new league campaign, with clubs hoping increased investment and renewed interest from supporters can strengthen the domestic game.
The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season is scheduled to kick off on Saturday, September 5, with 18 clubs competing for the national title, while renewed attention is being placed on the financial realities facing players and clubs across the country.
