The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has proposed a 30% increase in transport fares, with the new rates expected to take effect from September 10, 2026, subject to approval.
GRTCC General Secretary, Emmanuel Ohene, said the council has not yet implemented any fare increase as it awaits engagement with the Ministry of Transport following the submission of its proposal.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Ohene explained that the GRTCC submitted the request to the Ministry on Thursday in line with established procedures.
“We gave the letter to the Ministry on Thursday and per the protocols, we expect that they would make arrangements to engage us on the proposal,” he said.
According to him, the proposed 30% increment is subject to discussions between transport operators and the Ministry.
“If they have any reason why we shouldn’t implement the proposed increment and both parties make our case, then we decide the way forward,” he added.
Mr Ohene stressed that the GRTCC has not approved or implemented any increase in fares yet, clarifying that the 30% adjustment is currently a proposal awaiting consideration and engagement with the Transport Ministry.
