The Public Relations Officer of the Atwima Mponua District Education Directorate, Eric Aboagye, has defended the character of the teacher involved in the Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School incident, describing him as a long-serving and disciplined hostel caretaker.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Mr Aboagye said the teacher has managed the private hostel for about seven years without any recorded disciplinary incident.
“One thing about the teacher is that he has taken care of the hostel for the past seven years, and there has never been any incident of this sort,” he said.
He added that the teacher is generally regarded as a disciplinarian who strictly enforces hostel rules.
“From what we know, he is a disciplinarian, and he is supposed to maintain order. If there had been patience, we might not be where we are today,” he stated.
According to him, the hostel is privately owned, and the teacher was appointed by the owner due to his strict approach to discipline and ability to manage students effectively.
He explained that the teacher was initially reluctant to take up the role because of concerns about managing students who may not fully comply with rules.
“The owner of the hostel built it and asked the school authorities to recommend someone disciplined to manage it, and he was chosen for that role,” Mr Aboagye said.
He further noted that the hostel operates under strict regulations, which some students sometimes struggle to follow, especially as they become more independent.
“When students get to that stage, they want to do things their own way, and I believe that contributed to the misunderstanding,” he explained.
Mr Aboagye added that while the teacher’s actions cannot be excused, he may have reacted under provocation.
“He is a human being like all of us. If he had exercised a little more patience in the face of provocation, this would not have happened,” he said.
Meanwhile, the teacher has been arrested after a viral video showed him allegedly assaulting a female student on campus.
The footage, which has sparked widespread public outrage, appears to show the teacher physically confronting the student while other students are heard pleading for him to stop. He is seen repeatedly striking the student and at one point lifting and throwing her to the ground.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
