The Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in the Atwima District, Amos Owusu, has called on authorities to pay greater attention to the challenges facing teachers in the district, arguing that the focus should not only be on the ongoing controversy at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Owusu said teachers in the district continue to work under difficult conditions, including severe staff shortages, while remaining committed to educating students.

“We have over 300 teacher deficits in the district,” he revealed.

According to him, some schools are struggling to function because of inadequate teaching staff.

“In some schools, there are only three teachers, including the headmaster, yet we’re giving all our best,” he said.

Mr. Owusu expressed disappointment over what he described as the treatment being meted out to the teacher at the centre of the Nyinahin Catholic SHS incident, insisting that educators deserve fair treatment and support.

“Teachers are not being treated fairly,” he lamented.

He also disclosed that the detained teacher is facing personal challenges, noting that his wife recently gave birth.

“His wife has given birth barely a week or two ago,” he said.

The GNAT Chairman further explained that the teacher’s family played a significant role in supporting students in the hostel.

“She was the one taking care of the female students,” he added.

While stressing that teachers remain dedicated to their profession, Mr. Owusu said authorities must address longstanding issues affecting the education sector, including teacher shortages and welfare concerns.

His comments come amid ongoing discussions surrounding the altercation between a teacher and a female final-year student at Nyinahin Catholic SHS, an incident that has sparked reactions from teacher unions, education authorities and the public.
