The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has visited the family of a young boy who was recently subjected to a disturbing child abuse incident at North Legon in Accra, where he was tied to a motorbike.

The visit, which took place with a delegation from the Ministry, was part of efforts to assess the child’s welfare and provide immediate support to the family following the incident.

During the interaction, the Minister met with the child and his relatives, assuring them of the government’s commitment to his protection, care and psychosocial recovery. She emphasized that the boy’s well-being remains a priority and that he will receive the necessary support to help him recover from the trauma.

She also commended the Good Samaritan whose swift intervention helped rescue the child, as well as individuals and organisations that supported the family in the aftermath of the incident.

Speaking during the visit, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey urged caregivers to adopt non-violent and positive methods of disciplining children, stressing that abuse cannot be treated as a private family matter when a child’s safety is at risk. She further called on the public to remain alert and report all forms of child abuse to the appropriate authorities.

As part of the support package, the Minister, on behalf of government, presented assorted relief items including bags of rice, cooking oil, beans, milk, tin tomatoes, toilet rolls, antiseptics, soap and other essentials to help the family cope during this difficult period. A cash donation of GH¢5,000 was also made to assist with the child’s care and medical needs.

She further disclosed that the family will be enrolled onto the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme to provide long-term social support and improve their living conditions. Plans are also underway, in collaboration with the Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, and the local assembly to provide a wheelchair for the child’s sister to aid her mobility.

The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to safeguarding children’s rights and ensuring that vulnerable families receive consistent care and protection.
