Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has expressed strong admiration for newly appointed Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz, describing his arrival as a major boost for Ghana ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The experienced Portuguese tactician has signed a four-month contract to lead Ghana into the global tournament scheduled to be staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Ghana national football team coach Carlos Queiroz replaces Otto Addo, who was dismissed following a series of disappointing results, including back-to-back defeats during the March international break.
Speaking after an official introduction to the Sports Minister ahead of Queiroz’s unveiling at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, Mr Adams praised the coach’s vast experience and expressed optimism about his impact on the national team.
“We are going to benefit from him, and as the saying goes, the old wine tastes the best,” the Buem MP said.
“He has gathered experience all over, and his experience will be put before the Black Stars of Ghana, and so we are so lucky to have such an experienced coach, not just at the club level but at the national level and at the World Cup stage,” Mr Adams added.
The meeting was attended by Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku, members of the Black Stars management committee, and Executive Council members.
Queiroz is expected to begin his tenure with preparatory matches against Mexico and Wales as Ghana steps up its build-up to the tournament.
Ghana will make their fifth World Cup appearance in 2026, having been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27.
After early exits in both the 2014 and 2022 editions, Queiroz will be tasked with steering Ghana to a stronger showing on football’s biggest stage.
