The National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has described the 2024 general election as a difficult contest, noting that several factors initially worked against the party.
Speaking during an interview on Lambussie FM during his Thank You Tour of the Upper West Region, Mr Asiedu Nketia said there were widespread doubts about the NDC’s ability to secure victory ahead of the polls.
“The nature of the task going into the 2024 election was so daunting. There were a lot of people who doubted our abilities,” he stated.
According to him, the then-governing New Patriotic Party had mobilised significant support across various sectors of society as part of efforts to retain power.
“They were preaching ‘breaking the eight’, so it was clear they had no intention of leaving power. They wanted to do everything within their means to retain it,” he said.
Mr Asiedu Nketia also pointed out that the existence of a hung Parliament at the time added to the complexity of the political landscape, making the task ahead even more challenging.
He explained that the NDC adopted a strategic approach by dividing its campaign efforts, with a particular focus on parliamentary races.
“We decided to split the campaign, with some focusing on the presidential and my primary focus was on the parliamentary,” he revealed.
The NDC Chairman further suggested that at some point, the NPP appeared to lose momentum in the presidential race when comparisons were drawn between its candidate and John Dramani Mahama.
Despite the challenges, Mr Asiedu Nketia said the party remained determined and embraced the difficulty of the task.
“I like challenges a lot,” he remarked.
“If you follow the path everyone has done, then you are no different,” he added.
