The Paramount Chief of Sankore in the Ahafo Region, Nana Ogyedom Appiah Kubi Pabo Katakye (IV), has called on fellow chiefs and security agencies to join the government in the fight against illegal mining (galamsey) to protect farmlands.
Speaking at Sankore during the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration in the Ahafo Region, held under the theme “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure The Future,” he expressed concern over the alarming rate at which illegal miners are destroying farmlands. He urged chiefs, as custodians of the land, alongside security services, to actively support government initiatives led by President John Dramani Mahama.
“The measures initiated by this government are on track in combating illegal mining, but their effectiveness will increase significantly if chiefs and security services actively participate,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Ahafo Regional Minister, Charity Gardiner, encouraged residents to support government policies aimed at strengthening agriculture. She emphasized the importance of consuming locally grown produce to boost the economy, improve health, and create jobs.
