The Greater Accra Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Dennis Martey Adjannor, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss the Municipal Chief Executive for Ablekuma West, George Emmanuel Kpakpo Allotey, as well as Physical Planning officers, over recent flooding in the municipality.
According to Mr Adjannor, the officials failed to prevent illegal construction on waterways, a situation he said directly contributed to severe flooding in the area following heavy rains.
He noted that structures demolished last year at Lafah and surrounding communities had been rebuilt, despite earlier enforcement exercises.
“The majority of the structures in the affected zones were erected illegally,” he stated.
Mr Adjannor accused the authorities responsible for supervising development and issuing building permits of failing to enforce regulations prohibiting construction on waterways.
“This failure has exposed residents to flooding every time there is heavy rainfall,” he said.
Parts of the Ablekuma West Municipality were submerged after several hours of rainfall, leaving many residents displaced and properties destroyed.
Mr Adjannor made the remarks during a visit to flood-affected areas within the Weija and Ablekuma municipalities to assess the situation.
Meanwhile, some affected residents also expressed frustration over the recurring flooding and called on authorities to take urgent action to prevent future disasters.
