Akwasi Opong-Fosu, Board Chairman of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), has been named among Africa’s Top 100 Board Chairs in a continental recognition celebrating excellence in corporate governance and institutional leadership.

The recognition comes at a time when African economies are under increasing pressure to attract investment, strengthen governance systems and remain competitive under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

According to the organisers, the list honours board leaders who have demonstrated strong governance, institutional transformation and strategic leadership across both public and private sector institutions.

For Opong-Fosu, the recognition reflects a period in which the GIPC has been repositioning itself from a regulatory body into a more investor-focused facilitation agency.

Investment reforms and decentralisation efforts

Under his leadership, the GIPC has introduced a number of reforms aimed at improving Ghana’s investment climate.

These include the GIPC Business Reform Action Plan, which features a 24-hour premium service designed to accelerate investor onboarding and reduce bureaucratic delays.

The Centre has also expanded investment promotion beyond Accra through Regional Investment Roadshows aimed at linking district-level projects with international investors.

During his tenure, Parliament also passed the GIPC Bill, transitioning the institution into an authority.

Cross-sector governance experience

Before his appointment at GIPC, Opong-Fosu served as Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, and later as Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation.

The profile accompanying the recognition highlighted his cross-sector experience in governance, investment and development as one of his key strengths.

Under his board leadership, the GIPC has also established dedicated AfCFTA and Diaspora desks to expand market access and investment opportunities for Ghanaian businesses.

The article further noted his support for initiatives in technology and human capital development, including the One Million Coders Programme.

Continental recognition

The Governance & Business Boardroom, organisers of the annual list, described it as a celebration of leadership excellence, ethical governance and institutional growth across Africa.

Other individuals named in the 2026 list include Nigerian business mogul Aliko Dangote, Ghana Grid Company Board Chair Kuukua Maurice Ankrah, and Nigerian entrepreneur Ibukun Awosika.

The recognition places Opong-Fosu among a select group of African leaders acknowledged for shaping governance and institutional reform across the continent.
