The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has expressed his concern over the existing system for paying winning bonuses to national teams and athletes.
His comments follow the standoff involving the Black Queens, who threatened to boycott their second-leg qualifier against Egypt in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) due to unpaid bonuses.
After a meeting between the Sports Ministry, the technical team, and the players, the Queens agreed to honour the fixture.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Mr Adams said he believes the current structure for disbursing bonuses is flawed and requires urgent review.
“I have a problem with the structure, and I believe we should have a conversation around it,” the Member of Parliament of Buem constituency said.
He added that as part of his policy reforms, a committee will soon be inaugurated to review the remuneration system for national athletes and sports officials.
“As part of my policy initiative, we have a committee to look into the remuneration structure of our athletes and officials.”
The Black Queens are scheduled to face Egypt in the return leg on Tuesday at the Accra Sports Stadium, holding a comfortable 3–0 advantage from the first leg in Ismailia.
