President John Dramani Mahama has visited Fuveme in the Volta Region to assess the impact of recent tidal waves on affected communities and engage residents on both immediate relief efforts and long-term coastal protection measures.
During the visit, he noted that the area is part of the West Africa Coastal Areas Management Programme, a $150 million initiative supported by the World Bank aimed at addressing coastal erosion and tidal wave impacts across vulnerable communities.
President Mahama assured residents that although the project is currently at the design stage, implementation will begin soon. Planned interventions include the construction of sea defence systems, groynes, and ecosystem restoration measures such as coconut tree and mangrove planting.
In the meantime, he disclosed that government is considering immediate interventions, including dredging of the estuary, to reduce pressure on the coastline and help mitigate further damage.
