The Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment has sounded the alarm on the increasing number of young people succumbing to drug abuse, calling on the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and other religious groups to join forces in combating the menace.
Speaking at the 6th Development and Social Services (DSS) of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana at Abokobi, Director of Youth Development and Empowerment, Alhaji Mohammed Saani Adams, lamented illicit drug use, saying, “It is killing ambition and entrepreneurship skills” among the youth.
“If they are into drugs, they cannot do anything,” Alhaji Adams warned, emphasising that drug abuse leads to deviant lifestyles. “As a ministry, we welcome partnership with the Presbyterian Church of Ghana to fight this canker seriously.”
The Director expressed concern over the alarming rate of drug abuse among young people, noting that the situation is further exacerbated by the breakdown of social support systems.
“What is worse is that we have a complete breakdown of the social net such that nobody is taking care of anybody.”
Alhaji Adams also highlighted the emerging trend of combining normal soft drinks with other substances, urging parents to be vigilant.
“The most frightening part of it is that it is no longer the known drugs; it is now about combining normal soft drinks like Fanta, Coke, Malt and coffee with something else. We need to check this even in our homes.”
