Ghanaian rapper Medikal has opened up about how an early career disappointment at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) shaped his journey and resilience in the music industry.

Speaking on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, he revealed that about a decade ago, he received seven nominations, including Artiste of the Year, but walked away without a single award.

“I got seven nominations and won nothing, but it didn’t break me,” he said.

According to him, such moments have caused many artists to lose momentum or completely fade from the spotlight.

He explained that some musicians tend to snub award schemes after such disappointments, distancing themselves from the system, but over time, many of them “fall off.”

Medikal, however, chose a different path.

Rather than letting the setback define him, he used it as motivation to work harder, remain relevant and continue building his career.

He described himself as a “proud product of failure,” stressing that the experience toughened him and strengthened his determination.

Today, he finds himself back in strong contention, earning eight nominations a decade after the disappointment—something he believes is proof of his consistency and growth.

“I’m a proud product of failure, and now I’m back with eight nominations, better than 10 years ago,” he added.

He noted that despite the earlier setback, he never gave up on his craft and remained focused, which has kept him active and competitive in the music scene.
