2025/26 GHPL: Karim Zito laments players’ lack of rest ahead of season opener

Asante Kotoko head coach Abdul Karim Zito has expressed concern over his squad’s tight schedule and limited recovery time as the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season gets underway.

The new campaign kicks off today, Friday, September 12, with Hearts of Oak taking on league debutants Hohoe United at the Accra Sports Stadium. Kotoko will travel to Berekum to face Chelsea at the Golden City Park on Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00 GMT.

Reflecting on the lead-up to the season, Zito noted that his players have had little opportunity to rest. “After the season, we didn’t have a chance to recover. We played the FA Cup, contested the President’s Cup, and immediately after, we traveled abroad to play Kaizer Chiefs. By the time we returned, it was time for preseason, so we couldn’t rest properly,” he said.

Zito added that their preparations were further disrupted by the GHALCA Top 4 competition. “We were still in the first phase of preseason when the GHALCA Top 4 came up, so I had to adjust our approach. We then regrouped, focused on the Champion of Champions, and came out winners,” he explained.

Despite these challenges, Zito and his squad are now turning their attention to their season opener against Berekum Chelsea.
