The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that a total of 461,640 candidates are expected to sit for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Addressing a press conference in Accra, the Acting Director-General of GES, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davies, said the figure includes 270,381 males and 254,259 females—representing a 0.2 percent increase compared to last year.
He noted that the practical examinations will begin on Tuesday, August 5, with theory papers set to start on August 20. The entire examination period is scheduled to end on September 19, 2025.
Prof. Davies stated that the exams will take place at 701 centres across the country. He added that GES is working closely with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the security services to ensure law and order throughout the period.
Touching on four conflict-prone schools—Nkwanta SHS, Bawku SHS, Nalerigu SHS, and Zuarungu SHS—Prof. Davies gave the assurance that adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure a smooth and incident-free exercise.
He also issued a stern warning to invigilators, supervisors, and candidates against engaging in examination malpractice, stressing that anyone found culpable will face the full rigours of the law.
