Bosomtwe Member of Parliament (MP), Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has condemned the violent incidents that marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on Friday, July 11, 2025.
Citing the assaults on former Awutu Senya East MP Mavis Hawa Koomson and journalists, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful said it was “deeply regrettable” and a serious threat to Ghana’s democracy.
Dr. Adutwum, in a statement, emphasised that such incidents weaken the foundations of Ghana’s democratic system and urged immediate steps to avert reoccurrence.
“This recurring cycle of electoral violence must come to an end and be consigned to the dark days of our past.
“As a country committed to democratic governance, we must prioritise the peace and stability of our nation above all other partisan and self-interests,” he stated.
He warned that Ghana’s hard-won democratic gains must not be reversed by what he described as acts of political aggression and intolerance.
Reflecting on the recent election outcome, Dr. Adutwum said it should serve as a reminder to all political stakeholders that power must be earned through ballots, not intimidation.
“The overwhelming political victory that Ghanaians bestowed on President Mahama should be a testament that, as a people, we should not use electoral violence to settle past political scores,” he said.
He urged the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the incidents and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
“Accountability is critical if we are to restore public confidence and deter future acts of electoral violence,” he stressed.
Dr. Adutwum concluded with a call for national unity and a renewed commitment to peace, law, and democratic principles.

I wish to express, in the strongest possible terms, my condemnation of the acts of violence that marred the just-concluded Ablekuma North re-run
The brutal assault on the former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson and a journalist from the EIB Network is not only deeply regrettable but also a threat to our democratic values.
This recurring cycle of electoral violence must come to an end and be consigned to the dark days of our past. As a country committed to democratic governance, we must prioritize the peace and stability of our nation above all other partisan and self-interests.
The collective efforts we have made over the years to build a strong and united Ghana should not be undone by acts of political intolerance, aggression, and violence.
The overwhelming political victory that Ghanaians bestowed on President Mahama should be a testament that, as a people, we should not use electoral violence to settle past political scores. Our deepened contemporary political credentials as a nation should teach us to come to terms with the fact that it is high time we kept our past political differences at bay and adopted values that will unite us as a people.
I urge all Ghanaians to remember that we are, first and foremost, one people. Political competition must never come at the expense of human dignity and life.
Our desire to see our respective parties succeed must not translate into violence or injury against fellow citizens.
Accordingly, I call on the Hon. Minister for the Interior to, as a matter of urgency, initiate a thorough investigation into the incidents of violence and ensure that the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.
Accountability is critical if we are to restore public confidence and deter future acts of electoral violence.
Let us work together to preserve the peace, uphold the rule of law, and safeguard the democratic values that form the bedrock of our Republic.
