It’s better to be a messenger of a ruling party than a General Secretary in opposition – Kufuor to NPP members

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has issued a sobering reminder to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on the true essence of political power.

Speaking at the launch of the NPP’s newly established Patriotic Institute in Accra, Mr. Kufuor stated, “It is better to be a messenger of a party in power than the general secretary of a party in opposition.”

The Patriotic Institute, a certificate-awarding institution, is aimed at deepening ideological education, building leadership capacity, and enhancing the party’s governance preparedness.

The event brought together several leading party figures, including NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, who highlighted the institute’s critical role in reshaping the party’s direction and vision for the future.

Addressing party faithful, the former President stressed that the ultimate objective of any political party must be to win and retain power, cautioning that all efforts, resources, and strategies should revolve around that singular goal.

Mr. Kufuor’s comments come at a pivotal time for the NPP, which is still reeling from its 2024 electoral defeat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The party has since been grappling with internal divisions and early jostling for the 2028 presidential ticket.

His concerns echo recent remarks by Okaikwei Central MP, Patrick Boamah, who revealed that the former President has been increasingly worried about the NPP’s fading internal unity and what he perceives as a growing leadership vacuum within the party.
