The Ghana Black Stars could line up a fifth international friendly as part of their build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Ghana Football Association intensifying efforts to fine-tune preparations under new head coach Carlos Queiroz.

Ghana had initially announced four pre-tournament matches following qualification for the global showpiece, with Otto Addo still in charge at the time.

However, a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria in Vienna and a 2-1 loss to Germany in Stuttgart led to his dismissal.

Queiroz has since been appointed on a short-term deal, pending a post-World Cup review, after an extensive search for a successor.

With confirmed fixtures against Mexico and Wales scheduled for May and June respectively, the GFA is now actively pursuing an additional friendly.

Officials believe the two remaining matches may not be sufficient for the experienced Portuguese coach to fully implement his tactical ideas and shape the squad ahead of the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Queiroz is expected to arrive in Ghana this week for his official unveiling, accompanied by five members of his technical team. He will also be formally introduced to Sports Minister Kofi Adams as part of protocol arrangements.

Following his unveiling, the 73-year-old is set to take charge of the team for the friendly against Mexico, before the final warm-up clash against Wales on June 2.

The Black Stars will feature at their fifth World Cup in Group L, opening their campaign against Panama on June 17, followed by fixtures against England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Queiroz brings a wealth of experience to the role, having guided South Africa to World Cup qualification in 2002, taken Portugal to the knockout stages in 2010, and led Iran to successive appearances in 2014 and 2018. Ghana will be hoping his arrival brings stability and a stronger showing after early exits in 2014 and 2022.
