The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has warned that teachers in the Adenta Municipality will not return to the classroom when schools reopen if suspects involved in the assault of a teacher at Bethel Presby Junior High School are not arrested and prosecuted.

The warning follows an incident on April 8, 2026, in which a teacher, Mr Mohammed Abdela, was attacked by a group of young men after confronting a former student on the school premises.

According to GNAT, the former student, identified as Aaron Mensah, was found in a classroom during a mock examination allegedly going through pupils’ bags. When challenged by Mr Abdela, who was invigilating at the time, he refused to leave immediately and reportedly issued a threat before exiting the premises.

He later returned with a group of men on motorbikes and assaulted the teacher. The situation was brought under control after the intervention of another teacher, preventing further harm.

Mr Abdela subsequently reported the incident to the Ghana Police Service at the East Legon Police Station, where he was issued a medical form and formally lodged a complaint with the Criminal Investigations Department.

GNAT officials say that despite providing intelligence to support investigations, no arrests had been made as of April 17, raising concerns over what the association describes as police inaction.

The union’s Madina–Adenta–Abokobi Secretariat says the delay poses a serious threat to teachers’ safety and risks emboldening further attacks in schools.

GNAT has therefore called on the Adenta Municipal Directorate, the Adenta Municipal Assembly, and the East Legon Police Command to ensure the immediate arrest and prosecution of the suspects.

The association also referenced a broader pattern of violence against teachers, citing a recent court case involving students of Frafraha Senior High School who were fined for assaulting teachers.

GNAT insists it will not compromise on the safety of its members, warning that failure to act decisively could disrupt academic activities across the municipality.
