The Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Ahmed Ibrahim, has outlined key businesses expected to operate 24 hours within the government’s newly designed model markets under the 24-hour economy policy.
According to him, the initiative is aimed at boosting economic activity by ensuring continuous access to essential goods and services, particularly during nighttime hours.
Speaking on Ekosii Sen on Asempa FM, the Minister explained that although not all shops will operate throughout the night, critical services such as pharmacies, food vendors, salons, and other essential service providers will remain open to meet public needs.
“In the night time, not all shops will be open, but with the 24-hour market, you will get pharmacy, food, salon services and others. With security in place, people can confidently access these services,” he stated.
Mr Ibrahim noted that some areas in the country already operate informal 24-hour economies, citing places like Circle and Bana Ahenkro, where business activities extend beyond traditional hours.
He revealed that the government plans to build on such existing economic patterns by providing the necessary infrastructure to enhance and formalise these operations.
“At Bana Ahenkro, they already operate 24 hours, and the Bana 24-hour market will be built at the Bui Lake. We are identifying areas that already function this way and supporting them with infrastructure to expand their operations,” he added.
The Minister emphasised that markets are key economic drivers and that improved infrastructure will significantly increase productivity and business opportunities.
He further explained that the success of the 24-hour economy will require both physical development and a shift in mindset among Ghanaians.
“It is both a mindset shift and a physical activity. When people begin to believe it is possible, the system will naturally function,” he said.
The 24-hour market initiative forms part of the government’s broader agenda to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and enhance service delivery across districts nationwide.
