The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has expressed confidence that the vast experience of Carlos Queiroz will be key to Ghana’s chances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz, the former Iran and Egypt head coach and ex–Manchester United assistant manager, was appointed on a short-term deal following the dismissal of Otto Addo after Ghana suffered consecutive defeats to Austria and Germany in March.
With the Black Stars struggling for consistency, Asante Twum believes the appointment of the experienced tactician is a timely move aimed at stabilising the team ahead of the global tournament.
“We would have loved to have the coach (Otto Addo) who qualified us for the World Cup, but unfortunately, the results were not looking good, and after the search period, we appointed Carlos Queiroz as the new coach for the Black Stars,” he told DW TV.
“He is very experienced, and that is what we needed at this moment,” he added.
Queiroz has already begun work with the team, overseeing a 1-1 draw against Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium in his first match in charge.
The Black Stars are currently based in the United States as they intensify preparations for the tournament. Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.
They will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium, with their final group match against Croatia on June 27.
Ghana will be hoping to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since 2010, having exited at the same stage in 2014 and 2022.
