New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye has clarified his earlier remarks about an alleged drug laboratory in Ghana, saying the volume of narcotics seized in recent times suggests that there could be a depot or hub in the country.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Nana B, as he is popularly known, said his comment was not based on knowledge of the exact location of any drug laboratory.
“Who will reveal the exact location of a drug lab to you? By telling you it is in Greater Accra or this place when it is an illegality?” he asked.
He said the quantities involved in various drug seizures were significant and, according to analysts he had listened to, could suggest the existence of a hub operating in Ghana.
Nana B cited the large quantity of cocaine reportedly seized in France, comparing the volume to about 80 bags of cement.
“Just look at what was seized in France; it is about 80 bags of cement. I have listened to a lot of experts,” he said.
He also referred to the seizure at Pedu Junction, saying the quantities involved in the various interceptions should be a cause for concern.
The NPP National Chirman hopeful further pointed to Ghana’s reported position in the Antwerp drug ranking and questioned whether the country should be concerned.
“Look at the Antwerp drug ranking. Number 5: Are we not worried?” he asked.
The NPP Vice Chairman hopeful argued that the scale of the seizures suggests that Ghana could be more than just a transit point for narcotics.
“This means that for you to be number 5, it is like there is a depot because the quantum is not small,” he said.
He stressed that the alleged depot could be located anywhere, including an ordinary house, making it difficult to identify its exact location publicly.
“This is not just a transit point,” he added.
This comes barely 24 hours after the Minority Leader and Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, stated that the description of Ghana as a potential “hub” for cocaine-related activities was metaphorical and intended to provide context to concerns raised by government officials.
According to him, the statement should not be interpreted as a claim requiring him to provide evidence of Ghana being a cocaine hub.
